A Knotty Education
At the Beijing International Art School, good grades come in the form of neat splits and perfect contortions. While most of the 600 students are Chinese, two small groups of Russian girls and Burmese children stand out. Born into families of circus performers, these children were sent to Beijing by their governments to learn from the Chinese. For two years, they undergo an immensely tough routine of acrobatics, martial arts and dance routines and eventually return home to start work in the circus.
